How do we know if a piece is "authentic"? What makes something a work of cultural art?  Musical quality, cultural authenticity, and artist reputation are key considerations.

The government's definition of "Native American" has changed many times throughout history. The stipulations of "blood quantum" or "federal recognition" have been shaped by whites in an effort to ensure their control, and position the government as the judges of native identity. 

 Sometimes cultural appropriation is an unfortunate side-effect of our efforts to be inclusive. A growing number of modern musicians are striving to engage in collaborative relationships with Indigenous artists to authentically increase cultural awareness.
